The only 3D Flash Mahjong on the web. Mahjong is a Chinese game of skill, which involves four players. Although the game play in general is similar in all of the versions of mahjong, the game pieces and scoring, however, slightly differ depending on the regional variations. Almost similar to gin rummy, the object of mahjong is to build sets, as well as get the highest point value. In order to do this, each player selects and discards tiles (the game pieces, bearing different designs) until an entire set of combinations has been made. There are still scoring variations to be corrected for this HK edition.

Modern mahjong players, especially in the west, would probably understand the game as two completely different things. The first type is the traditional mahjong gameplay where four or three players compete for winning hands or melds similar to the card game gin rummy. Tiles are laid face down and arranged into a two-high square which gets slowly dealt out to players.

The game also offers in-app purchases that give even more boards, backgrounds, and tilesets to customize your gaming experience. All in-app purchases are also offered at a flat $2.99 per pack, which is more than worth the price. A game that offers hours of fun, customization, and continues to give free updates, Mahjong Epic is our choice for the best mahjong app for mahjong solitaire players.

Coming from the same creator as Mahjong Epic, Mahjong Titan echoes similar gameplay. The free game offers a base of over 1600 puzzle boards, eight tilesets, and 12 backgrounds. Aside from the over 1,600 boards in the base game, the developer offers constant updates, the latest on May 2021, that gave 1,075 boards and three tilesets for free. Currently, the game only offers in-app purchases costing $2.99 each that give you new board packs.

Functionally, the game is almost the same as Mahjong Titan, with the exception of a few graphic details. Besides that, however, the game is a solid solitaire mahjong game and offers a relaxed playstyle.

Between the guided tour and the online tutorial, Four Winds Mah Jong teaches you how to play competitive mah-jongg. Essentially, it's rather like a game of rummy, wherein three players get 13 tiles and the dealer gets 14, discarding one. You form a hand with one pair and four groups of three tiles, either matching or in sequence in suit. Each run of three is called a chow. Three-of-a-kinds are called pungs, and four-of-a-kinds are kongs. You can only claim a discarded tile if you can immediately form a chow, a pung, or a kong.

The guided tour leads you patiently through a couple hands. Once it finishes, though, the new game penalizes you for incorrectly claiming a tile, which seems harsh. The music sets a mood, although we would have liked a more serene color scheme. When you start a new game, you can set options such as which set of rules to follow. The downloadable Flash tutorial teaches you about game variations and tile suits. The trial version deals only two hands per game, but we found that enough to get us interested. Fans of mah-jongg solitaire should try Four Winds Mah Jong.

This was the Cold War and China was the enemy of the west. The United States filled our television and cinema screens, and the Commonwealth and Europe, especially after Britain joined the EEC in 1973, were the limits of the horizon. China was all but invisible. It was strange, then, that my father, a free-market intellectual and writer, was an enthusiast for mahjong, the ivory-tiled game with colourful Chinese characters and symbols printed on them. On Sunday evenings, the 144 tiles would burst out all over the dining room table from the faux leather case that contained them. I cannot explain why the game assumed the importance it did in our family, while it did not in others; but I have no doubt that it helped shape my perceptions and thinking about the world.
