The World's Fastest Indian(2005)

In 1967, Burt Munro is a sort of folk hero in Invercargill, known for his friendly easy-going personality, for having the fastest motorcycle in New Zealand and Australia, and for being featured in Popular Mechanics magazine. However, that recognition is contrasted by his exasperated next-door neighbours, some of whom are fed up with his un-neighbourly habit, such as revving his motorcycle early in the morning, urinating on his lemon tree, and not mowing his grass. Burt, however, has a long-time dream: to travel to the US and test his motorcycle's capabilities at the Bonneville Speedway. However, while modifying his motorcycle, Burt suffers a heart attack. An ambulance takes him to the hospital and he is told he has angina, and is advised to take it easy and not to ride his motorcycle. Burt ignores this advice, and is given medication.

In reality, Munro's record-breaking run at Bonneville came after several separate visits to the US, beginning in 1956. This was demonstrated, for instance, by a letter published in the May 1957 edition of Popular Mechanics (p. 6), which referred to 'H. A. "Dad" Munro' and his 1920 Indian Scout.[9] The visit to Bonneville shown in the film was a composite of several made by Munro. In 1962 he set a record of 178.971 mph at Bonneville. His fastest complete run there was 190.07 mph. While Munro did reach 205.67 mph on an uncompleted run, on which he crashed,[10] he never set a record of 201 mph at Bonneville (as the film suggests).

Read no further if you do not want to know how Burt does at Bonneville, although perhaps you have already guessed that "The World's Fastest Indian" is not about the second-fastest Indian. Yes, in 1967 Burt coaxed the Indian to 201.85 mph, even as a muffler was burning the flesh on his leg. That set a record in the category of "streamlined motorcycles under 1000 cc." It is a record, the film assures us, that still stands to this day. Burt returned nine times to Bonneville, becoming a hero, although deflecting attention with his diffidence, his shyness, his way of talking about the Indian instead of about himself. We are reminded that when Lindbergh flew the Spirit of St. Louis across the Atlantic, he titled his autobiography We -- so that it also included his airplane. That's how Burt feels about the old girl.

Munro set his unbeaten under 1000 cc class record of 183.59 mph in 1967. However, in his qualification race, he had pulled off an even more impressive 190.07 one-way run, which is the fastest ever official speed ever captured on an Indian. His 1967 record was later revised to 184.087mph in 2014.

In the film it is the answers Hopkins's Munro gives to thefirst customs officer he encounters that trigger a further examination of hisreasons for coming to the United States. Two more customs officials ask himto explain in detail. Munro repeats his goal of setting a world's speedrecord at Bonneville with his 'motorsickle.' One customs officerlooks dubious, but the second says, 'You know what--I think I read aboutyour bike.' Munro replies, 'Oh yeah' The officer continues,'It was in, um, Popular Mechanics a couple of years ago.' Munrogrins and says, 'That's right--that's me. Leslie Hobbs fromChristchurch sent that story in.' To which the customs officer says,'What was it--fastest motorcycle in Australia' Smiling, Munrosays, 'Yeah--and in New Zealand!'

This is the critical moment for Munro's odyssey, because thesecond customs officer's validation of Munro's identity andaccomplishments convinces the senior officer that Burt is'legitimate', and he gives Munro a visa for a stay of six months. This fictional scene is an adaptation of an actual exchange that the realBurt Munro related to Roger Donaldson in 1972, when he was making adocumentary called Burt Munro: Offerings to the God of Speed. (2) Munro toldthe director that in 1959 he had come to Los Angeles and driven to EdwardsAir Force Base in order to see the legendary X-15 rocket plane. I
